Anxiety Disorders in Children and Adolescents: Recognizing and Treating the Emerging Epidemic
Anxiety disorders are now recognized as the most common emotional disorder in the U.S., as well as in 10 out of 17 countries recently surveyed by the World Health Organization. The soaring trend toward anxiety has been accelerated by global stress and high-profile threats, such as terrorism, school violence, child kidnappings and other dangers. The increasing rate of traumas to children, which also include divorce, family breakdown, violence in the media and a failing school system, has produced a “shell shocked” generation suffering from anxiety in many cases. Our challenge is to recognize anxiety in children and help them cope.
In this workshop participants will grasp how anxiety develops in children and adolescents, and acquire practical treatment strategies that can be applied immediately in their professional work. Seven key anxiety disorders will be addressed: separation anxiety disorder, panic disorder, overanxious disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder, phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder. Emphasis will be on integrative psychotherapeutic interventions involving insight-oriented, cognitive-behavioral, mind-body, solution-oriented and family systems approaches.

Life After Anxiety: From Surviving to Thriving
Psychotherapists and clients alike are usually
adept at identifying the symptoms and problems associated with anxiety, such as worry, tension, difficulty relaxing, sleep disorders, panic
attacks, perfectionism, social avoidance, fears/phobias, obsessions, compulsive behavior and post-traumatic stress. But what replaces these symptoms when therapy is successful? What new and positive goals will we strive for in working with anxious clients? What new skills and behaviors can we prescribe for replacing anxiety with positive alternatives? How important is it for therapists to practice what we recommend to our clients?
In this workshop Dr. Foxman will present the DSM-IV anxiety disorders and organize them into three symptom groups: somatic, cognitive and behavioral. He will identify the anxiety replacements and positive alternatives for each group of symptoms and demonstrate the therapy strategies for achieving these new patterns. Treatment interventions will draw from a wide range of approaches, including mind-body, solution-focused, psychodynamic, mindfulness, spiritual and cognitive-behavioral therapy.
Attending this workshop will boost your therapy repertoire with interesting and effective therapy interventions, not only for reducing anxiety symptoms, but for replacing them with positive alternatives such as the relaxation response, mindfulness, optimism, higher self-esteem, gratitude, joy, emotional self-regulation, productivity and healthy lifestyle. A handout packet will include instructions for each therapeutic exercise learned in the workshop.

Social and Performance Anxiety in Children and Adults: Help That Works
Social anxiety is the most common emotional disorder in the U.S., with an estimated 19.2 million sufferers. The condition usually peaks in adolescents and persists into adulthood. This seminar will address social anxiety and its many variations, such as anxiety associated with public speaking and presentations, dating, interviews, using public bathrooms, parties, telephone communication, artistic performance, authority figures and sports and athletic competition. This program will begin with a useful blueprint for understanding why, how and when some people develop social/performance anxiety, which can be used as a psycho-educational step in treatment to demystify the condition and highlight the positive side of social sensitivity.
Somatic, cognitive and behavioral symptoms will be discussed with case examples. However, the emphasis of the seminar will be on strategies, interventions and techniques for reducing social/performance anxiety. The crucial issue of self-esteem will receive significant attention, especially in terms of how to help clients raise their self-esteem and social confidence. Recommended therapy approaches will emphasize mind-body and cognitive-behavioral interventions. In addition, group therapy activities and exercises will be demonstrated. Actual cases from Dr. Foxman’s practice will be used throughout the seminar to illustrate the therapy suggestions. Attending this seminar will boost your repertoire of interventions for this prevalent form of anxiety.
